With World Polio Day on 24 October, I’m proudly rooting for Rotary as we team up around the world to End Polio Now.

I had the honor of attending a Strike Out Polio event in July at PNC Park, home of the Pittsburgh Pirates MLB team. The Rotary Club of Delmont-Salem hosted the event, which raised $1.3 million for PolioPlus.

Later in the summer, I joined members of our Rotary family in supporting the Más Millas Menos Polio (More Miles Less Polio) bike ride. Felipe Meza Chávez and his team rode all the way from Ciudad Juárez, Mexico, to One Rotary Center in Evanston, Illinois, to raise money and awareness. The ride took 12 days, and Felipe and his team collected more than $100,000 to support the fight
against polio. It was a joy to greet them as they arrived in Evanston.

And I was thrilled to see Team End Polio raise global awareness around the 2024 Paris Olympics. This world-class roster of athletes, global leaders, and polio eradication supporters came together to advocate for a world where no child has to live in fear of being paralyzed by polio. Some of the athletes on Team End Polio are polio survivors themselves, adding weight to their advocacy.

These are just a few examples of the many ways Rotary has teamed up recently to End Polio Now. It is vital that we continue to seek out and recruit teammates in polio eradication, especially after the challenges our eradication efforts have faced this year.

The Rotary world was heartbroken to learn about the tragic passing in August of Aidan O’Leary, director for polio eradication at the World Health Organization.
I knew Aidan and worked with him directly. He was a tireless advocate in the fight against polio and a kind, genuine man. We will remember him both for his advocacy and his warmth.

But where there is hardship, there is also hope. I feel hopeful whenever I consider the countless ways Rotary supports the fight every day to eradicate polio.

As people of action, we don’t have the luxury of giving in to despair, even in the face of tragedy. The best way to honor Aidan’s memory is by teaming up and reaching our goal to End Polio Now.

We made a promise to the children of the world and their families. It is incumbent upon us, together with our global partners, to end this threat once and for all.

There are so many ways we can team up to eradicate polio. You can donate to the End Polio Now campaign, join or initiate a PolioPlus Society in your club or district, or take inspiration from the fundraisers I mentioned above.

I encourage Rotary members around the world to continue to seek out new teammates, so that together, we end polio.

My heart is full of gratitude to everyone who are behind the success of some districts events held in the merry month of October 2024 in which we also celebrate Economic and Community Development Month! As a solid and unified Rotary community in this place of the planet, we have witnessed how each of us have taken part in each of these successful and remarkable events to date.

We started the first week of October with the kick off ceremony of the District Bowling Tournament 2024 last 6 October 2024 at the 3rd Level of the Sta. Lucia Mall, Marcos Hi-way corner Felix Avenue, Cainta, Rizal. Hosted by the Rotary Club of Rizal Mideast (RCRM), the opening ceremony was well attended. District Governor Lady Raquel Zamora and I are extremely honored to grace the kick off
ceremony. Brace yourselves with more fun and exciting bowling sessions as we continue our tournament for six Sundays, particularly on October 6, 13, 20, 27, 2024 and November 10, and 24, 2024!

In the night of 12 October 2024, a formal dinner- fashion show event was staged at the Crowne Plaza Galleria, Ortigas Center, Pasig City. Dubbed as “Sulsi: Weaving the Magic of Filipino Couture,” the district’s End Polio Fundraising Fashion Show, it was a well-attended event marked by fashion, elegance and grace as Ginoos and Mutyas, which included yours truly and Spouse Raquel, strutted
the catwalk. Pointedly, this event was staged to raise the level awareness of the public on polio and generate funds for the district’s End Polio Campaign. What a beautiful way to celebrate the rich talents and culture of Filipinos through lovely Filipiniana masterpieces while at the same time supporting Rotary’s mission to End Polio Now! Thank you Rotary Club of Wack Wack, especially to Lieutenant Governor Rey Pineda, the event’s Chair, and Irresistible President Winnie Yumul. Our deepest appreciation also to couturier Russ Cuevas, our models, which included Past District Governor Ladies Zenaida Farcon and Victoria Solis, and of course to the key personalities behind the
success of this successful endeavor, namely, End Polio Zone 10A Coordinator, Spouse Angie Pineda, PDG Nelson Aspe, and LtGov. Sherrylou Khosiking.

Next held was the Pistarotary 2024, the traditional Octoberfest we all anticipate in the district as an annual fellowship event. Held on 19 October 2024 at the Metrotent Convention Center, Pasig City, hosted by the Rotary Club of Mandaluyong Premier, it was a night of fun, good music, friendly company, overflowing beers and drinks with pulutan to everyone’s delight. Pistarotary 2024 brought so many good memories and pleasure to all attendees. Everyone went home delighted and happy enjoying another memorable moment with fellow Rotarians, spouses and guests.

Of course, The Rotary Foundation (TRF) Recognition Night 2024 was held next on 22 October 2024, Tuesday, 6:00 p.m. at Ballrooms 2 and 3 of Solaire Vertis North, Quezon City.Hosted by the Rotary Club of Wack Wack and chaired by Past President (PP) Christina Barroga, it was a special event graced by Past Rotary International President (PRIP)/Past District Governor (PDG) Mark Maloney and Spouse/Past President (PP) Gay Maloney. That night was full of recognitions and gratitude to all the supporters of our Foundation. Various clubs and individuals came together to celebrate generosity, the joy of giving and friendship through TRF. Notably, recognitions were given to PDG/DRFC Nelson Aspe, EMGA Virgilio Farcon, EPNC Marilou Co, ARRFC Arturo Tanyag and DGE Gina Sanchez for giving Major Gifts in the amount of $10,000 or more. They were joined by PDG Benny Ricafort, PDG Louie Ticman, PP Celso Montalla, PP Claire dela Rosa, PP Pleshy Wee, and LTG Sherrylou Khosiking with their respective Major Gifts this Rotary Year. The Farcon Family, headed by PDG Virgilio Farcon and PDGL Zenaida Farcon, was cited as this year’s Paul Harris Fellow (PHF) Family as all their family members are already PHFs. Other clubs and individuals were also cited in
the following categories: New and Continuing Arch Klumph Society Honorees; Major Donors; New Endowment Funds; EREY Clubs and 100% Foundation Giving Clubs; Top 3 Per Capita Clubs; End Polio Now Countdown to History Campaign; Top 3 Clubs Contributing to Polio; Top 3 Individuals Contributing to Polio; Sustaining Member Clubs; New Bequest Society; and New and Multiple Paul Harris Fellows. How can I forget that part of the special event when Spouse Raquel and I were
sweetly greeted by my Irresistible Presidents through songs and a cake in celebration of our 30th wedding anniversary!

Thank you very much to all of you!You have all been incredible hosts, partners, supporters and participants in all these events. You have all been instrumental to the success of these endeavors.

May your tribe increase!
