The Magic of Rotary is belonging, and it’s a feeling that can appear when you least expect it.

Earlier this year, I was in Slovakia serving as a president’s representative during a six-week trip through Europe. When I wrote to Katarina Cechova, governor of District 2240 at the time, I mentioned that my grandmother Veronica Zilka grew up in a small village in the area before settling in the U.S.

It wasn’t long before Cechova tracked down my grandmother’s village, Jakubova Vol’a. She even organized a visit for me, where I received an unforgettable Slovakian welcome.

When I entered the community center of Jakubova Vol’a, a small crowd of people dressed in traditional Slovakian clothing greeted me. They sang with beautiful and powerful Central European voices that reminded me of my grandmother.

A lot of families play cards or games when they get together. When I was young, my father would pick up his accordion and lead my family in song. My grandmother would sing along with her impressive voice.

But the magic didn't stop there. District Governor Cechova really outdid herself. A local genealogist worked with a videographer to make a short film about my grandmother. We watched the video together in the community center.

When the video ended, I turned around and saw a man standing in the back of the room. I quickly learned that this stranger, Frantisek Zilka, was my second cousin. His grandmother and mine had been sisters. I felt like I had been struck by lightning.

I visited my newfound cousin's home, which happens to be the home where my grandmother was born. There, he shared old photographs I had never seen of my dad, my uncle, and my grandmother.

Since then, I can't stop thinking about my family of Rotary. When I refer to you as my family, I'm not just being kind. I really think of everyone in Rotary as my family. But I never would have imagined that my Rotary family would introduce me to long-lost personal family.

Sitting in that community center listening to traditional Slovakian music from my childhood filled me with joy and a profound sense of belonging. I am so grateful to District Governor Cechova and everyone who helped create that magical experience.

As members of Rotary, we have a unique opportunity to share the same magiv with each other and with the world. I encourage you to consider how you can help spread that magic and ensure other members of your club - other members of our Rotary family - feel like they truly belong.

September is marked as Basic Education and Literacy Month. This is aligned to one of our areas of focus in Rotary - Supporting Education.

Let us take a moment to reflect on the vital role that education plays in the development of individuals and
communities.
Education is a lifelong process which we all should be responsible for, not only for ourselves but also for others in need. Being one of our focus area, it is our duty as Rotarians to help bridge the gap by supporting educational initiatives and projects, promoting literacy programs and fostering an environment where everyone can learn and thrive. Indeed, literacy is the cornerstone of progress, empowering people to access opportunities, improve their quality of life, and contribute meaningfully to society. Millions of children and adults worldwide continue to lack
this fundamental right for some reasons, hence, I encourage everyone to get involved in every literacy project and to think creatively about how we can continue to be advocates for education in our local and global communities.

On another note, our district has recently concluded our highly successful three-part The Rotary Foundation (TRF) Roadshow, spearheaded by Annual Funds Chair/LtG Sherrylou Koshiking. The roadshow was aimed at educating
and inspiring Rotarians about the importance of contributing to TRF and its global initiatives. Done in three parts, the first roadshow involved Zones 6, 7, and 8 on September 7, 2024, followed by the second session for Zones 4 and 5 on September 14, 2024, and the final session for Zones 1, 2, and 3 on September 21, 2024.

Raquel and I express our deep appreciation for the efforts of the Rotarians who made the events a success. We extend our heartfelt thanks to everyone for their continued support in advancing The Rotary Foundation's campaigns. Special mention to our Annual Funds Chair/LtG Sherrylou Koshiking, for leading this event and for sharing effective strategies in TRF donations. In fact, to encourage participation and promote fun and excitement, the roadshows offered various incentives, including bear keychains, button pins, prizes, stuffed bears, and TRF
jackets for contributors of 1,000 USD, apart from raffle.

We also convey our gratitude to other notable speakers, namely, our End Polio Now Coordinator/PDG Marilou Co, District Rotary Foundation Committee Chair Nelson Aspe and DGE Gina Sanchez. DGE Gina pioneered the TRF Roadshow in our district which is now being adopted in other districts within Rotary Regional Zone 10A.

Also, let me extend my gratitude to other speakers, namely, PP Brilliant Chua, PP Marlyn Santos, PP Celso Montalla, and PP Arthleen Fetalvero, who shared their personal motivations for supporting TRF and the positive impact it has made on their lives and communities.

Maraming salamat po!
