Rotary Club of Marikina West (by sending a delegation of lawyer-members) conducted a free legal advice/consultation project for Barangay Malanday residents who were able to obtain helpful advice on their pending legal cases from high-caliber lawyers pro bono.
This project is in collaboration with the Lupong Tagapamayapa, Barangay Malanday which provided significant assistance by doing preparatory work of looking for residents needing legal advice and ensuring everyone that came at the venue are assisted and ushered to the lawyers accordingly. Lupong Tagapamayapa (or Barangay Peace Committee) dispenses Katarungang Pambarangay (Barangay Justice) that tries to settle conflicts at the barangay-level instead of going directly to the courts.
Projects pertaining to peace and conflict prevention/resolution has been close in the hearts of RCMW as evidenced by its previous projects such as Marikina City jail decongestion projects few years back wherein over-staying inmates who should have been out of jail earlier but due to no lawyers representing them cannot be released. Several lawyer-members represented them in court (pro bono) for their release. Also, in the last 5-6 years, conducting free legal advice/consultation projects by RCMW has been a consistent project year-in, year-out.
As an added bonus, those that received free legal advice also received an umbrella which contains Rotary logos and served also as a public image for the Club. "Payong" (umbrella) is a word play with "Payong Abogado" (Lawyer's advice).
